A Frozen Wasteland…

I find myself once again running the road in North Dakota. My usual stomping grounds while out in the truck.

The state is full of life and there is always something new to see during the summer. Not so today the 11th of January. Today I find myself in a barren and frozen wasteland. Its rather quite today. Traffic is light. By which I mean a couple other trucks and the occasional car.

It is scenes like this that leave a guy feeling isolated and alone.

Then out of nowhere I hear the call on the chicken band. “How ’bout ya east bound? Whatcha leave behind ya?”
This let’s me know I’ve got the company of another driver. Even if its for just a few moments.

The XM satellite radio is always on. My constant companion. I’m lost without it.

Life is never boring. Even out here on the open road in the middle of a frozen wasteland.

My BlackBerry keeps me in constant contact with “the outside world.”
In between calls from my loving wife and kids I manage to send off a few Facebook posts. Blogging and tweeting on Twitter make the time fly by.

There’s always something going “not quite right” during the winter on the road.
This morning was one of those days. I dropped the air suspension on my trailer to give it more slope so my load would all drain out of the tank. I forgot I’d warmed up my brakes when I jumped off the interstate. The yard at the plant I was delivering to was full of fresh powder snow. You guessed it. The snow melted in the brakes and then froze. I discovered this when I went to leave and couldn’t move. After a few whacks with my 4# hammer on the drums I was ready to hit the road again.

Till next time…
