I was recently at an elementary school concert and enjoyed the musical experience.
However, I was more than a little disappointed with the behavior of many adults in the audience.
In the past there has always been much chatter and noise between groups. Normally not a huge deal… In the past this was only mildly annoying.
In the past, many would get up to leave once their child had finished singing. This is something I find rather annoying borderline rude. I mean really… I understand that your child is “only” in the first grade and there are three more class that follow. But really… How much trouble is it for you to sit and enjoy the hard work of these remaining classes? This time, it seemed almost a third of the audience had left by the time the last group was taking the stage.
The biggest reason I had a problem with this poor adult behavior was the concert never really stopped. In between each and every class there were a couple of piano students that played a piece for us. This was something that I found to be a very welcomed change. A nice addition. Though, it did stretch the whole concert time line by half an hour. No real big deal.
I figure I’m not the only person that found this behavior in the past to be unacceptable. How many times was the announcement “please remain seated and quite until the end of the concert” really necessary? I guess, maybe if this announcement had been something like “sit down, stay sitting down, and shut up” maybe the message would have been understood.
I’m still trying to figure out when did we as a society lose our manners? I certainly wasn’t raised that way. What about you?
– A letter to the editor I decided needed writing.
