Tutorials

This is an ongoing project that will be added to as time permits.  And as such you may find that at times it looks unfinished… Because it is.

Initial Setup
On initial setup (new device or after flashing a new ROM) skip through the setup screen until you see this…

image

Enter your primary Gmail account.  Be sure to use the one that you want everything tied to such as your contacts list as well as any applications you may purchase from Google Play aka the Market.

What about adding other email accounts?  You can always use the native android Mail client.  However, it really sucks.  Third party applications rule here.  K9 Mail is efficient & customizable.   Find it free in the Play Store.

Haptic Feedback
How do I shut off this crazy vibration every time I touch the screen? This is simple. Use the following to navigate to the proper place and uncheck one box.
Menu/System Settings/Sound/
Now scroll down until you find “Vibration Feedback” near the bottom. Simply uncheck the box.

How to add/remove Home Screen icons
The ability to add, remove or rearrange Home Screen elements is simply one of the best features of android.

Long press on any Home Screen icon or widget to move its position or to drop it in the “Trash Can” to remove it from the screen.

You want to add an icon from the application drawer? Simply open the app drawer, long press and hold on the chosen application and then release it on the Home Screen. Now move it to the desired spot.

Adding new widgets is a matter of long pressing on an open space on the Home Screen on which you wish to see the widget. Long press pops up a menu which gives you several options. Choose widget, this allows you to scroll through the available selections.

How do I change the wallpaper?
There are two painfree methods for setting wallpaper. Both achieve the same results.

Long press on the Home Screen and choose “Wallpaper” from the menu. Then choose Gallery, navigate to the proper folder and make your selection, click on the image, click “More”, then “Set As.”

Exiting an Application
When exiting an application there are two easy ways to accomplish this, each giving different results. Simply hitting the “Home” key will immediately bring you from whatever screen you happen to be on straight to the Home Screen. This is ok most of the time. However, this method leaves the application you were previously using in an open/active state. I will often times do this so that I can get right back to what I had been doing at a later time. By far the best method of exiting an application once finished using it is to hit the “Back Arrow” until you arrive back on the Home Screen.

QBall45’s recommended applications
ES File Explorer – you will likely want/need a file explorer. This one is efficient and free.

K9 Mail – simply one of the better 3rd party mail handling clients. It is also free.

BeWeather – this is a fantastic weather application. I highly recommend it. Both free and paid.

Plume – a personal favorite Twitter client.
SwiftKey 3 – this is one of the very best 3rd party keyboards. Very much worth its price. The predicted text is fabulous. Free trial and paid.

Not long ago I switched BlackBerry® devices. A normal routine thing right? As I set up the “new” device naturally I added my email accounts and applications. I went through adding keycodes to the applications where needed. I then checked my contacts list and sure enough it was sync’d via my Gmail® account. On checking my calendar I was a bit disappointed. No sync on my calendar. This got me thinking “there has to be a sync option for the calendar.” Naturally I hit Twitter with the question “can I not sync my BlackBerry® calendar with Gmail®?” Of course I mentioned @blackberryhelp. I received a reply from one of my followers that in fact Google has an application for BlackBerry® that would sync both contacts and calendar called Google Sync. After a moment of “dooh! Why didn’t I think of that?” I hit the download link and installed the application. Did it work? Most certainly it did. Perfectly sync’d my calendar and the content of my contacts list. After a few tweaks to a couple of the contacts all was well and right in my world again.

Now this morning I received a direct message from @blackberryhelp. I was referred to this LINK on the BlackBerry® website. Much to my pleasure, I suddenly learned that I had no need for an application to do what I wanted. Its all in the settings.

My findings after using both the native BlackBerry® Sync option found in Setup and the Google Sync Application are as follows. Both do the intended job which is to sync contacts & calendar entries between device and pc. Both give the user the option to sync either or both the calendar and contacts. Google’s app gives the option of manual synchronization as well as an automatic mode. Which can be set as often as every two hours. The native Synchronization option found in email setup in my opinion is superior. While it lacks the option to manually sync this is really unnecessary. Like emails, calendar entries are automatically pushed between device and web. Changes made on your device are almost instantly reflected on your pc. However, I’ve noticed a several minute delay for entries made on the web to show up on my device. Pick one. Make a choice. You won’t be wrong either way. Personally, I ended up staying with the native option as for me fewer apps are better.

The following is the article I had been referred to. I hope this makes your life just a little bit easier when switching devices.

To enable Google® calendar synchronization with the BlackBerry® smartphone, the Gmail account must first have the calendar enabled. To enable the calendar for the Gmail® account, log into the web interface through http://gmail.com and then access the Calendar option on the top left side of your screen. Accept or update Name and Time Zone information if required. If you have previously used the Gmail calendar, these steps may not be required.

Once the Gmail calendar has been enabled, the following steps can be completed on the BlackBerry smartphone:

1. Launch the Email Settings application within the Setup application or Setup folder on the BlackBerry smartphone.

2. If applicable, select Internet Mail Account.

3. Select the Gmail address and select Edit.

4. Scroll down and expand Synchronization Options.

5. Select the Calendar check box and click Save.

6. Confirm the Gmail password, and click OK.

Information will start to synchronize. Please note that data synchronization may take several minutes to update on the BlackBerry smartphone. The BlackBerry smartphone user will be notified when synchronization is complete, as demonstrated in the following example.

You’ve made the decision to start blogging and have decided that WordPress it what you what to use. The website works great. If you have access to a pc. Well WordPress & the BlackBerry Team have given us WordPress Mobile for BlackBerry. You can get it HERE if you don’t already have it. This is a free OTA download.

The first thing you must do in order to start blogging with your newly installed app is to go to the WordPress website and create your account. This is where you will choose the name for your account as well as the domain name for your page.

Your accounts set up on the website. Now how do you get started with the application on your BlackBerry? First, open the application. Simple enough. Now you will need to add your accounts to the mobile application. How? Well, start by hitting the BB menu button and selecting “add blog”

Then select the top item on the menu “wordpress.com blogs”

Then sign in to your WordPress account

And Select the Blog you wish to add to your mobile WordPress App.

So now you’ve added your blog from the website to the mobile app. Now how do you start posting? Click the top line “posts”

This is a new blog so you will see this “Hello world” post. This can either be left, edited, or deleted. I choose to delete it.

Now hit that BB menu Button and select “New” the next screen you see will be your post screen. This is where you make it all happen. Fill in your title, add categories, links, pics etc.

I like to add a category that fits what I’m writing about.

Now that you’ve added your category its time to blog. Have fun writing.

So you’ve finished writing and have hit “send” in the menu list. Your screen should look something like this.

So now go open your blog page in your browser and enjoy what you’ve written. How? Remember that domain name you chose when you first registered your blog? http:// blog name.wordpress.com

Oh, so you wish to add pic’s and links to your post? And have them placed exactly where you want them to appear? Stay tuned as this is not difficult. Its just not a 101 class.

Part 2 “Links”
You’ve mastered Blogging with WordPress for BlackBerry 101. Basic writing. This 110 tutorial will cover how to add Links or web addresses into your post.

The simplest is to just type it out. Such as: http://thesaucereport.com/ This shows the full address and allows for copy & paste to browser. Also it allows you to click on it and off you go to in this example The Sauce Report. However, I prefer to hide the actual web address and show http://thesaucereport.com/ as The Sauce Report instead.
But how? Simple enough. Hit the BB menu button and select “Link”

Then you may either type in the address or select “Paste URL” which is generally what I do. Copy the link or page address from your browser. Then click the “Paste URL” button. Be sure to add a description as this is what will appear in the text rather than the actual address.

If you’ve done this correctly it should appear like this on your blog post.

Part 3 “Pictures”
This is part 3 in my WordPress Mobile App for BlackBerry series. This is where the fun begins.

Start by going to the menu and select Media.

Then click “Add photo”

And click “Add Photo From library”

Then follow through the menu’s until you find the exact picture you want to add. This is where sticking the pics you know you are going to add in a separate folder. (Especially helpful if you plan to add more than one pic.)

You’ve found the picture you wish to add. What next? Hit the BB button and click “Select”

Now your screen should look like this with a thumbnail preview of your picture.

Now go back to the menu and click “All on Bottom” or “All on Top this will align all of your selected pictures either top or bottom. This is important when adding several pictures or when adding to or editing a post such as this tutorial.

Its usually at this point after adding my picture that I select “Send” from the menu. This will take a minute or so to upload the files. Once your post has been uploaded or “sent” check your post on your blog page to see that things are looking proper.

Ok, so you’ve found an error or you simply wish to add text between your pictures. Go back into the WordPress Mobile App and open the post you wish to edit.

Much the same as links, pictures will also show as code with a start & end tag. (See the next picture for an example of these start/end picture tags) To add text between your pictures simply locate the start/end tags and hit “Return” or the “Enter” key.

If you should need to move a picture up or down because its “out of order” simply go to the menu and click “Select” and then cut & paste it where you want it. When your finished simply click “Send” in the menu.

From here I think you should have a fair grasp on blogging with WordPress Mobile for BlackBerry.

So, I think this about wraps up the Tutorial for the WordPress Mobile App for BlackBerry.

In addition to being a BlackBerry addict, I’m also a firearms nut. Having just discovered my preferred Sunday talk radio show was now on BlackBerry Podcast I “had” to get it. Both the App and the show that is.

I’ve downloaded the New BlackBerry Podcast Application. Great. Now how do I listen to my favorite podcast? Well, let’s just say at first I was a little lost. I figured out how and thought I’d share what I learned.

1. Open the App and click on “Explore Podcasts” at the top of the screen.

2. Click on “Categories” in the bottom right.

3. Click on the category you wish to search. In this case “sports” fit what I was looking for.

4. Scroll through the list until you find what your looking for.

5. Back to the main screen. Here you should now see your newly selected podcast. Click on it to select it.

6. Now on this screen click subscribe. (I’d already done so. Therefore the box shows unsubscribe.). Also on this screen you will select the particular episode you wish to download.

7. Once you’ve selected the episode you want. Click “Download”

8. Wait for the download to complete.

9. It’s time now to sit back and enjoy the show.

Be sure to check the settings in the options menu.

I hope you’ve found this useful.
Your fellow crackberry addict & firearms enthusiast.
