A Busy Week

The early bird gets the worm or so they say.  Every morning this week I was up and gone before sunrise.   Sometimes you just have to sit and wait for the cement truck to finish unloading so that the cement guys can pour the sidewalk that ajoins the new street that you’re trying to get graveled prior to paving.  All in a days work.  The view from one of the pits I visit on an extremely regular basis.  Yes… It’s just another rock pile.  For much of Friday I spent time either watching other trucks being loaded while waiting my turn or I was hustling to keep up with the others on the road.   It blows my mind just how much dirt/rock a fleet of dump trucks can move in a single day. The evidence of this was clearly evident today at the dumping site as well as the rock pile.    All in all I had another fine week of dump truckin....

Paving,  Patching And Lots Of Hauling

First order of business today was to load hotmix for the paving crew.  However, first things first I discovered that I needed my alternator replaced only two blocks from the shop.  Hotmix asphalt gets tarped to help prevent heat loss in transit to the paving machine.  After hauling a load of sand used in asphalt manufacturing I loaded another load of hotmix and headed an hour west to work with the patching crew.  They were busy patching city streets.  This was another new experience for me as the guys used the skidsteer to scoop one bucket of mix at a time out of the box. . A return load of “junk” that gets ground up and recycled into new asphalt.  The rest of my day was flat out busy as heck Hauling from a site that is having its parking lot completely rebuild from the vase up.  Tomorrow brings yet another new adventure… Seal coating!  I can’t wait.   Until then,...

Rain On The Horizon

Paving work was cut short today because there was a big rain storm on the horizon.  Today was another first for me… Dumping hotmix asphalt on the paving machine.  This was definitely an interesting experience.  I look forward to doing so again as it’s impossible to to become good at it without repetition.  I look forward to seeing what adventure and experiences tomorrow brings.  Until next time,...

The First Day Pictures

I’m sure you’ve read the Post I wrote on August 19th and know that I’ve switched jobs.  Well, today was my first day as a dump truck driver.  I’ve learned a bunch today and I’m totally exhausted.  Pork chop dinner was just about ready when I arrived home this evening.  I think it’s time to chill out with the family and watch some TV.   Naturally it wouldn’t be a proper first day on a new job without “breaking” something.  On what was likely to be my final load of the day I had an airbag blow out on the front lift axle.  The mechanics at the shop have assured me that they’ll have ‘er ready to work by the time I get to the shop in the morning.   And that’s a wrap!  I’m physically and mentally exhausted.  Time for a shower and my pillow.   Until next time…...

The End Of An Era – I Quit!

As the sun sets bringing the end to the day, so too does it bring the end of my career as a full time trucker.  Yes, I quit my job of twelve and a half years.  After thirteen years and eight months of leaving the house on Sunday and returning sometime Friday afternoon I’ve decided it was time for a lifestyle change.  It is long since time that I’m at home and in bed next to my wife at night.  So what am I going to do now?  I’ve accepted at position with a local paving and excavating company as a dump truck driver.  I know that this is a dramatic change.  However, I think it’s exactly the change that my family has been needing for some time now.  Both Mrs and I are excited and nervous about the new job.  We have that flood of unending questions running through our heads… Will I like this type of work, will it money be what we need, how will it be with me in the house every day, how does the unemployment thing work during the winter, as well as a bunch of other things.   Today was my last day.  The new job starts Monday morning.  I think I’m ready.  I guess we’ll find out if I’m ready or not.  I’m looking forward to sharing pictures of construction equipment and interesting things from a new line of work.   The view from my former office on my last night in the rig.  This was a fitting final load as it was also my first load of oil delivered on my own....
